Prof. Mihaela van der Schaar

Mihaela van der Schaar is the John Humphrey Plummer Professor of Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Medicine at the University of Cambridge. In addition to leading the van der Schaar Lab, Mihaela is founder and director of the Cambridge Centre for AI in Medicine (CCAIM) and the Chief AI Scientist at the Francis Crick Institute.

Mihaela was elected IEEE Fellow in 2009 and Fellow of the Royal Society in 2024. She has received numerous awards, including the Johann Anton Merck Award (2024), the Oon Prize on Preventative Medicine from the University of Cambridge (2018), a National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2004), 3 IBM Faculty Awards, the IBM Exploratory Stream Analytics Innovation Award, the Philips Make a Difference Award and several best paper awards, including the IEEE Darlington Award. She was a Turing Fellow at The Alan Turing Institute in London between 2016 and 2024. In 2025, she was appointed as Spinoza Guest Professor at Amsterdam University Medical Center. 

Mihaela is personally credited as inventor on 35 USA patents (the majority of which are listed here), many of which are still frequently cited and adopted in standards. She has made over 45 contributions to international standards for which she received 3 ISO Awards. In 2019, a Nesta report determined that Mihaela was the most-cited female AI researcher in the U.K.

Prof. Dr. Maria-Esther Vidal is a Professor at Leibniz University Hannover and Head of the Scientific Data Management (SDM) group at TIB–Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology. She is also affiliated with the L3S Research Centre and holds the title of Full Professor (retired) at Universidad Simón Bolívar (USB), Venezuela.

Her research focuses on semantic data management, data integration, federated query processing, and machine learning over knowledge graphs, with a strong emphasis on neuro-symbolic AI.

Prof. Vidal is the co-author of more than 240 peer-reviewed publications that have been recognized with the Science Award on Responsible Research by Stifterverband and the Leibniz Best Minds Programme for Women Professors

Under her leadership, her team has developed widely recognized technologies that span the entire knowledge graph lifecycle. These technologies not only advance the state of the art but also address pressing societal challenges by fostering explainability, accountability, and trust in AI.

She serves as an expert on several advisory boards, summer schools, and doctoral consortia, and has an extensive record in mentoring the next generation of researchers. She has also served on doctoral committees across Europe and Latin America (France, Italy, Sweden, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, Argentina, Uruguay, and Venezuela).

Prof. Bram van Ginneken

Bram van Ginneken was born in Nuenen in 1970. He studied Physics at Eindhoven University of Technology and Utrecht University. In 2001, he obtained his PhD at the Image Sciences Institute on Computer-Aided Diagnosis in Chest Radiography, where he continued to work and set up a research group on medical image analysis. His PhD research on automated detection of tuberculosis resulted in medical device software called CAD4TB. With installations in over 75 countries worldwide, CAD4TB is the most widely used autonomous AI solution for the interpretation of medical images. In 2010, he moved to Radboud University Medical Center where he set up the Diagnostic Image Analysis Group and was appointed full professor in 2012. He (co-)authored over 300 publications in international journals. Since 2010, he also works for the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Medicine MEVIS in Bremen, Germany. In 2014, he founded Thirona, a company that develops software for CT lung image analysis. He pioneered the concept of challenges in medical image analysis and created grand-challenge.org. In 2024, he founded Plain Medical, a company that develops AI solutions to reduce the workload of radiologists.
